Like a quarterback throwing a pass, the launch system aimed not for where Mars was, but for where it would be when the craft arrived. NASA threw that pass, and the rover-football reached its round and red receiver more than 250 days later, and touched down on Sunday, Aug. 6, 2012 (Eastern Daylight Time). NASA did not "throw" MSL from Earth's surface, however; the agency launched it from planetary orbit. Here's how: Once the lifting vehicle reached space from Cape Canaveral, its nose cone, or fairing, opened like a clamshell and fell away, along with the rocket's first stage, which cut off and plummeted to the Atlantic Ocean. The second stage, a Centaur engine, then kicked in, placing the craft into a parking orbit. Once everything was properly lined up, the rocket kicked off a second burn, propelling the craft toward Mars. About 44 minutes after launch, MSL separated from its rocket and began communicating with Earth. As it continued on its way, it made occasional planned course corrections. Once it hit the Martian atmosphere, the fun really began. Curiosity began its journey exploring Gale, an impact crater nestled between Mars's southern highlands and northern lowlands. Measuring 96 miles (154 kilometers) across, Gale sprawls over an area equivalent to Connecticut and Rhode Island combined. Instead, the Mars Science Laboratory used the sky crane touchdown system illustrated here, which is capable of delivering a much larger rover onto the surface of Mars. Within Mars, rising higher than Mount Rainier towers above Seattle, stands a sediment mountain 3 miles (5 kilometers) high.|UNITED NATIONS - U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says Russia’s attack on Ukraine - as he appealed for President Vladimir Putin to stop his troops - was “the saddest moment” of his five-year tenure. But during the meeting, Putin announced that he was launching a “special military operation” in eastern Ukraine. A war would cause deaths and displacement and people will lose hope in the future, Guterres said, adding Russia’s actions would harm the global economy. “What is clear for me is that this war doesn’t make any sense,” Guterres said, stressing that it violates the U.N. Charter and will cause a level of suffering if it doesn’t stop that Europe hasn’t know since at least the 1990s Balkans crisis. BEIJING - Asian stock markets have plunged and oil prices surged after President Vladimir Putin announced Russian military action in Ukraine. Market benchmarks in Tokyo and Seoul fell 2% and Hong Kong and Sydney lost more than 3% Thursday.

But one company has another alternative: wires that are flat instead of round. The company is Southwire. It specializes in creating thin, flat wires and cables that you can glue to a wall and either paint over or coat with a concealing material to blend it into your wall. Once you've installed and concealed the FlatWire, you can have that clean, cable-free look that you see in the advertisements. Southwire currently offers several FlatWire products for audio, video, data and low-voltage wiring solutions. Future FlatWire products will include 120-volt alternating current (VAC) electrical wiring, HDMI cables and a cat-6 cable emulator. All of the products are flexible. Are about as thick as a sheet of paper. FlatWire comes in several different types. The speaker wire and low-voltage wire products look like a pair of copper strips encased in a transparent film. The other FlatWire products have narrower bands of copper encased in film. Depending on the wire's function, there may be one, two or three separate bands of copper.|Video restoration (e.g., video super-resolution) aims to restore high-quality frames from low-quality frames. Different from single image restoration, video restoration generally requires to utilize temporal information from multiple adjacent but usually misaligned video frames. Existing deep methods generally tackle with this by exploiting a sliding window strategy or a recurrent architecture, which either is restricted by frame-by-frame restoration or lacks long-range modelling ability. In this paper, we propose a Video Restoration Transformer (VRT) with parallel frame prediction and long-range temporal dependency modelling abilities. More specifically, VRT is composed of multiple scales, each of which consists of two kinds of modules: temporal mutual self attention (TMSA) and parallel warping. TMSA divides the video into small clips, on which mutual attention is applied for joint motion estimation, feature alignment and feature fusion, while self attention is used for feature extraction. To enable cross-clip interactions, the video sequence is shifted for every other layer.

Further, the TCNN framework is model-agnostic and can be used in conjunction with other model design choices with minimal additional complexity. Image-guided interventions are becoming the mainstay of surgery. The task of image semantic segmentation presents a straightforward path to scene understanding through the categorization of every pixel of an image based on the structure it constitutes. However, a major limitation is the significant annotation effort and opportunity cost that annotating segmentation datasets entails for medical professionals, particularly when annotating fine-grained structures with high surgical semantics. A natural consequence is a lack of large and well-annotated surgical segmentation datasets compared to the computer vision community at large. As a result, there has been an increasing focus on optimally using the limited and precious datasets that are available. Overall, the extension of image semantic segmentation methods to video-based applications, or video semantic segmentation, remains a challenging and open problem. One shortcoming of applying methods designed for image semantic segmentation to videos is that they fail to leverage the rich and abundant relationships between frames of videos.

During that same time period, the most dramatic increase in female suicides occurred in the "food preparation and serving related categories," the grouping that includes jobs like baristas, chefs and restaurant managers. The job categories with the lowest suicide rates were "education, training and library" for men and "installation, maintenance and repair" for women. American suicide rates in general have been increasing at a pace that has mental health experts on alert. Since the turn of this century, suicides in the working age population (between 16 and 64) have risen by 34 percent, and each year more than 44,000 people end their lives, typically with firearms. The CDC sees the workplace - where most adults spend their days - as a starting point for identifying suicide trends in hopes of finding ways of reversing them. Nevertheless, the CDC noted that the workplace is an underutilized place for suicide prevention. People could be trained there to recognize the signs of suicide and refer others for support. Improving working conditions and reducing stress on the job might also lower suicide attempts. Human beings are innately social creatures with an ability to affect each other in profound ways - one reason many mental health experts believe that suicide is contagious. This is particularly true when a celebrity commits suicide, as impressionable fans may copy their idol's behavior. In 2014, scientists documented a 10 percent spike in suicides in the four months following the suicide of professional funnyman Robin Williams.

Enforcing restrictions at checkpoints like this one helps airports deter security threats. Security is a top priority in the air travel industry. The federal government, through its various agencies, has strict regulations about whom and what they allow beyond the airport security gates, out on the tarmac and on commercial airplanes. Security personnel take extra precautions when threats seem imminent. This includes suspicious occurrences such as an unlabeled box found abandoned in the terminal or an unidentified person found roaming the tarmac. The airport could also be on high alert after a bomb threat. In extreme cases, airlines might divert your flight to another airport or cancel the flight altogether before you take off. One of the most dramatic impacts on flights due to security precautions occurred in September 2001. That month, which included the four-flight terrorist attack that shook the United States, airlines canceled 99,324 (20 percent) of their scheduled flights.

Like backscatter X-ray machines, millimeter wave scanners produce detailed full-body images of passengers, but they do it with ultrahigh-frequency millimeter wave radiation rather than X-rays. If you went on name alone, you might think "advanced imaging technology machines" could help doctors hunt for tumors or other medical conditions. In reality, the label -- euphemism, if you're cynical -- adopted by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) describes the whole-body scanners found at airports that detect weapons, explosives or other threats being carried on passengers. According to the TSA's Web site, the agency had installed 800 advanced imaging technology machines at 200 U.S. November 2012. The machines come in two flavors, based on the type of electromagnetic radiation they use to make a scan. Backscatter machines -- about 30 percent of the installations -- send low-energy X-rays to bounce off a passenger's body. Millimeter wave (mmw) scanners emit energy more akin to microwaves. Both see through clothing to produce a 3-D image of the person standing in the machine.

It even generates reports for easier reimbursement from your employer. Plus, the app is password protected -- always a good idea where financial matters are concerned. But when it comes to your finances, details are key, and this app can help you sort them out. Sorting through that many snapshots -- much less sharing them with friends. Family -- can be so daunting that it never gets done at all. Fortunately, there are a number of iPad apps devoted to the organization and dissemination of digital photos. Sort Shots ($5.99 at the app store) offers a wide variety of features to help get your pictures in order. For example, you can tag your photos with keywords, either individually or in groups. If you're already using photo management software on your home computer, Sort Shots can import many of the ratings and keywords from those programs. Both allow you to upload files or photos from your tablet and access them later on another device, such as a computer or your iPhone.

They may still have spiritual elements or feelings of calm. OBEs can happen spontaneously, or drugs or meditation can induce them. Some NDEs have elements that bear little resemblance to the "typical" near-death experience. Anywhere from one percent (according to a 1982 Gallup poll) to 25 percent (according to some researchers) of subjects do not experience feelings of peace, nor do they visit Heaven or meet friendly spirits. Instead, they feel terrified and are accosted by demons or malicious imps. They may visit places that fit Biblical descriptions of Hell, including lakes of fire, tormented souls and a general feeling of oppressive heat. There have been a few reports of shared NDEs, in which someone connected to the dying person accompanies them on their out-of-body journey. This might take the form of a dream that occurs at the same time that the subject was near death. Children have also been the subjects of NDEs. Very young children tend to report surreal experiences that have some common NDE elements.|The Health Care Tax Credit made health insurance more affordable for some groups, until it expired to make way for the Affordable Care Act. The HCTC was created as a part of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Reform Act of 2002 (otherwise known as the Trade Act of 2002). The program was expanded and extended a number of times until it finally expired on Jan. 1, 2014, to make way for the tax credits offered by the Affordable Care Act. The HCTC paid 72.5 percent of the health care premiums for those who qualified for the program. To be eligible for the HCTC, you had to receive government assistance through a Trade Adjustment Assistance program or the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (we'll explain these programs on the next page). Family members of eligible HCTC recipients could also qualify for the credit. And the credit wasn't available with just any old type of health coverage - your health plan also had to meet certain requirements. The HCTC was an advanceable, refundable credit, which means that you didn't have to wait until you filed taxes to get the credit - if you chose, the HCTC program would pay your insurer directly every month when your premium was due. If you chose to wait until tax time to receive the HCTC, it would come in the form of credit against the taxes you owed, or as a refund. Who qualified for the HCTC, and how did they receive their benefits? Head to the next page to find out. It was a very specific group of people that qualified for the Health Care Tax Credit. There were two eligibility categories: candidate requirements and general requirements.

Although it might seem misogynistic to include a GPS device on this list, in reality these gadgets are essential for men and women alike. In 2009, Forbes described Apple as "the world's most discretely feminine brand," fawning over its sleek, curvaceous designs and straightforward user experience. With its iPods, Macbooks and iPhones, the brand has clearly become the apple of female consumers' eyes. Despite tough competition from the range of gadgets that take the top spot on in this list, women constituted about 34 percent of the iPad early adopters, according to 2010 user analysis by Yahoo! A blind woman sits in a chair holding a video camera focused on a scientist sitting in front of her. She has a device in her mouth, touching her tongue, and there are wires running from that device to the video camera. The woman has been blind since birth and doesn't really know what a rubber ball looks like, but the scientist is holding one. And when he suddenly rolls it in her direction, she puts out a hand to stop it. The blind woman saw the ball. Well, not exactly through her tongue, but the device in her mouth sent visual input through her tongue in much the same way that seeing individuals receive visual input through the eyes. In both cases, the initial sensory input mechanism -- the tongue or the eyes -- sends the visual data to the brain, where that data is processed and interpreted to form images.
